The Munson Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center,
the most comprehensive treatment center in northern Michigan,
is designed to achieve full recovery from chemical dependency.
Regular office hours are 8 am to 8 pm, Monday through Thursday
and from 8 am to 4 pm on Friday. Our telephones are answered 24
hours a day, seven days a week. For more information, please call
(231) 935-6382 or 1-800-662-6766.
Admission Services
The Centralized
Access Center (CAC) coordinates admission to Munsons
programs. The CAC is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week
by trained professionals who will determine the proper level of
care. A team of professionals evaluates each case, and their recommendation
for placement in the proper program is discussed with the individual.
A CAC clinician is on duty from 8 am to 11 pm, Monday through
Friday and is available for emergencies at any time.
A financial expert is available during regular
office hours to review the costs of recommended treatments and
to assist in understanding insurance benefits and other forms
of payment.
Detoxification Services (Withdrawal)
In rare cases of severe life-threatening physical dependency, acute hospital detoxification allows a patient to
be safely monitored throughout withdrawal from drugs or alcohol.
This is done under the close scrutiny of our professional hospital
staff at nearby Munson Medical Center. In less severe cases, the
process can be done at a nearby facility. Munson Medical Center
CAC staff can help arrange admission for sub-acute detoxification services.
Intense Levels of Care (Modified Medical/Social
Model)
These levels of care stress the importance
of individuals focusing all their energies on recovery. Away from
everyday duties, participants can spend concentrated periods of
time on the therapy, education, and support needed to positively
restructure their daily lives.
A team comprised of a physician, clinical
nurse practitioner, counselors, recreation therapist, family counselor,
and treatment assistants will provide all services. To ensure
individualized care, the team continuously reevaluates each participants
treatment needs. The team also makes recommendations about progress
toward treatment goals, resolving personal issues, and a participants
readiness for discharge.
All participants attend daily group therapy,
educational sessions, and a 12-step group. Other services include
individual and family therapy, recreational therapy, a spiritual
group, and either a mens or womens group. Stays vary
in length according to individual needs, but the typical length
of stay is approximately two weeks. Participants attend seven
days a week. They can be admitted to any of the following programs
and "step down" through the continuum of care, from
a more intensive to less intensive program.
Intensive Outpatient Program With Housing: Participants attend a full day of regular programming. Medical
care can be accessed as needed. On-site housing is provided for
a nominal fee. All meals are included.
Day Treatment Program: Participants
attend all daytime Intensive Outpatient With Housing programming.
Medical care can be accessed as needed on-site. Participants do
not stay overnight. They usually commute to Munson. Lunch is included.
Participants in these programs are encouraged
to attend an aftercare program.
Intensive Outpatient Evening Program/Structured
Outpatient:This program provides intensive
counseling for chemically dependent patients and their families
during evening hours so that participants can continue their daytime
work schedules. The program includes group therapy sessions and
lectures on chemical dependency and recovery issues. These 90-minute
sessions are held three times a week for eight weeks. One night
is devoted to family issues. Individual and individual/family
sessions are also included. Up to four months of Aftercare may
follow this program.
Aftercare Program:Lifelong
recovery begins following chemical dependency treatment. An individual
aftercare program is developed for each patient to prevent relapse
and teach awareness of "trigger" mechanisms. This may
include group or individual counseling, in addition to community
support groups.
Outpatient Services:A licensed and certified
counselor treats outpatients. This
service provides less intensive counseling for individuals who
do not require more intensive programs. It is also for patients
who have completed more intensive programs. Co-dependent family
members, significant others affected by chemical dependency, and
adult children of alcoholics are also treated. Placement in individual,
group, or family counseling is determined after an individual
assessment by professionals.
Intervention Information and Consultation:
Available through Outpatient Services. Other services
available through Outpatient Services include educational lectures,
presentations, structured interventions, and counseling for compulsive gambling
behaviors.
Health Professional Recovery Program:
Provides health professionals with an opportunity to enter treatment
and to recover from their diseases early in the disease process.
The program is unique because it covers a vast array of health
professions including, but not limited to physicians, nurses,
pharmacists, psychologists, licensed counselors, occupational
and physical therapists, and others.
Community Services
Because chemical dependency is not only an
individual problem, but a community problem, Munson encourages
staff to participate in prevention and awareness efforts in the
area. Munsons staff provides educational lectures, seminars,
workshops, and panel discussions to promote understanding of the
disease process, recovery, and related concerns. Munson sponsors
and hosts an Educational Series and free public lectures.
