The number one cause of excessive daytime
sleepiness is simply not getting enough time in bed at night.
The average adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep
in order to be rested and functioning well during the day. Excessive
daytime sleepiness is a major cause of motor vehicle accidents.
Every year, approximately 2,000 Americans die as a result of accidents
caused by someone falling asleep at the wheel. Sleep deprivation
produces impairment similar to alcohol intoxication.
