Synagis®, also called palivizumab, is an antibody
produced by recombinant DNA technology that was first introduced
in the U.S. market in 1998. It is approved for use in preventing
severe lower respiratory tract infections caused by respiratory
syncytial virus (RSV) in high-risk infants and children younger
than 24 months of age. It is not a treatment for established RSV
infection.
Synagis® is given as an intramuscular injection
every month during the fall, winter, and early spring months.
Munson Medical Center provides Synagis® immunization
at the Specialty Clinics twice monthly from November through April
with a physician's referral.
What is RSV?
RSV is a common cold virus that most children will
have evidence of by the age of two years. It usually occurs during
the late fall, winter, or early spring months and is easily spread
from respiratory secretions through close contact with infected
persons, or contact with contaminated surfaces or objects. Illness
begins most frequently with fever, runny nose, cough, and sometimes
wheezing. Symptoms are variable and differ with age. Premature
infants and those with underlying lung or heart conditions are
most at risk for developing severe RSV illness, and are those
whom the immunizations with Synagis® are appropriate.
Infants who are born prematurely (less than 32 weeks gestational
age) and are less than 6-12 months of age at the start of the
RSV season (usually November)
Infants who are born prematurely between 32 and 35 weeks gestational
age and are less than 6 months of age at the start of RSV season
with other risk factors, such as exposure to environmental air
pollutants, day-care attendance, school age siblings, or congenital
abnormalities of the airways
It is important that you discuss this question with
your infant's physician. Your physician will make the final recommendation
as to whether your infant should receive Synagis®.
What are Synagis® side effects?
The place where the shot is given may become red
or tender. Rarely, side effects may include vomiting or diarrhea,
cold symptoms, ear infections, rash, or pain. As with any medicine,
there is risk of an allergic reaction. Make sure to discuss your
concerns and questions with your health care provider.
