House Shelter & Domestic Crisis Services
Did You Know:
- Every 15 seconds a woman is battered in
the United States.
- 52% of all women murdered in the US are
killed by a current or former mate
- 33% of American homes experience domestic
violence; half of these involved physical or sexual abuse of
some kind.
River House offers help
Temporary Shelter: Safe, short term
housing for men, women and children.
Individual and Group Counseling: Both
residential and non residential clients.
Crisis Intervention: 24 hour crisis/support
line and transportation to the shelter; victims assistance
information through the Victims of Crime Act.
Advocacy/Referrals: Assist clients
with FIA, Legal Aid, housing, employment, health, and sexual assault
information. Court advocates provide assistance with PPOs
and will be with you if you go to court.
Programs for Children & Youth:
Advocates support and help children and youth cope with the effects
domestic violence may have in their lives, through support counseling
and groups. Over 80% of children whose mothers are beaten are
abused themselves.
Advocacy & Counseling for Victims of
Sexual Assault: Crisis response advocates provide crisis intervention
and emotional support, as well as necessary information and referrals.
Legal advocacy and ongoing counseling is also available.
Alternatives to Abuse Program: This
is a 27 week program for abusive men who meet regularly with couselors/educators
to learn skills to replace abusive behavior. The program helps
men to identify and take responsibility for their battering behaviors.
If you are being abused or you suspect that
someone you know is being abused, a River House Advocate is always
here to talk to you. You do not need to reveal your name, but
if you do, confidentiality will be maintained.

Opportunities to Help:
- Volunteer to work in the shelter or in
your community providing a variety of services assisting victims.
- Tax deductible contributions enable us
to expand program services.
- Toys, clothing, furniture, dishes and other
household items help rebuild lives. (Please call our office
at 989-348-3169 for a list of current needs).
- Check with your school to see if they have
a work-study program in human services.
